Leaving home to study at a summer school can feel a little overwhelming, especially if that school is located in a different country. However, there are a few things you can do to prepare and help make the experience feel much easier.
Here are some of our top tips to help you settle into your new summer school and make the most of your experience…

  • To help you feel more relaxed about starting your new summer school, it is a good idea familiarise yourself with some language basics before you arrive. There are many language resources available online, or in the form of a smartphone app, to help make learning fun and easy. You could also try watching foreign films with subtitles or listen to music in your chosen language.
  • We also recommend doing as much research as you can before you travel abroad. Find out about the local area, the traditional foods you’re likely to eat and the local culture. The more you know about the place you’re going to be living, the less likely you are to experience culture shock or homesickness.
  • Visit the website of the summer school you are attending to learn more about life at the school and the activities they offer. You may also be able to use the website to view images of your new surroundings, see the rooms you will stay or browse photos of the staff. One of the main causes of nerves is the unknown, so the more you can find out about what’s ahead, the more relaxed you will feel.
  • For many students, knowing what to pack can be tough. However, you should take the time to think about what is truly necessary to make packing easier. Only pack the essentials. If you are missing anything after you have arrived, you can always visit the local shops. It is also a nice idea to pack some familiar items to remind you of home and provide comfort, such as some family photos of a favourite sweet treat!
